This looks interesting.. 🙂
Set 20,000 years ago, Alpha (previously titled The Solutrean) follows a young man, played by X-Men: Apocalypse's Kodi Smit-McPhee, who is surviving in Europe in the Upper Paleolithic era with his mother, father and the other members of his tribe. It's a simple life: hunt for food, look at the stars, and above all else, survive. Unfortunately during one of the tribe's excursions for food, the young man is injured by a stampeding bison, and while the father is able to kill the angered animal, his son is knocked over a cliff and thought to have died.
Fortunately, the young man survived the fall, and after setting his leg straight, he sets off to rejoin his tribe. But there are threats that await him as he travels to his destination, but he won't be alone facing them. Taking pity on an injured wolf that tried to kill him, the young man nurses the canine back to health, and together, they embark on an epic journey. The two of them will still have to survive the elements and fend off other predators (including a sabertooth tiger), but as their adventure progresses, they'll build a bond that is apparently the origin of why humans and dogs are so tightly connected.
Considering that many movies released nowadays are either based on a preexisting property or are prequels, sequels or remakes/reboots, Alpha looks like it will be one of the more unique theatrical offerings next year. Granted, if this trailer is any indication, it won't be dialogue heavy, but the emphasis on the action and quieter moments between Kodi-Smith McPhee's character and the wolf as they grow closer. Visually Alpha looks incredible in certain ways , so we'll just have to wait and see if the story holds up, too.
Directed by Albert Hughes (whose credits include Broken City and The Book of Eli, the latter of which he co-helmed with his brother Allen), Alpha hits U.S. theaters on March 2, 2018, putting it in competition with the Jennifer Lawrence-led Red Sparrow that weekend. While we wait for more updates and previews from Alpha, look through our 2017 movie guide to find something to your liking that will come out in the latter half of the year.
